A legislator of the ruling BJD on Tuesday urged the Odisha government to raise the upper age limit for job application by 10 years, on par with Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Goa and Uttarakhand.

Currently, the upper age limit for government job application in Odisha is 32.

BJD MLA S R Patnaik, during the Zero Hour in the Assembly, said raising the age bar would enable many unemployed youths to apply for government jobs.

The lawmaker from Khandapada pointed out that around 12 states in the country have extended the upper age limit for government job application to 40 and above.

Some states have also set 45 as the upper age bar for government jobs, he said.

Given the fact that large number of posts remains vacant in the government sector, hiking the upper age limit to at least 42 years would be beneficial for the administration too, the legislator reasoned.

Leader of Opposition Pradipta Kumar Naik had also raised the matter in the House two days ago, claiming that age limit extension would help many skilled candidates find a job.

Devi Prasad Mishra, another ruling party MLA, told reporters outside the House that Goa and Telangana have revised the upper age limit to 45 and 44 respectively to facilitate worthy aspirants to apply for jobs.

In Uttarakhand and Andhra Pradesh, too, the upper age limit has been increased to 42, Mishra added.
