Odisha to receive fresh rain due to new low pressure area

Rain-soaked Odisha is set to receive more rain over the next few days with a new low pressure area likely to form over Bay of Bengal, the Meteorological Centre here said.

The low pressure area is likely to form over northern Bay of Bengal around August 28, while southwest monsoon is also active over Odisha, it said.

This will be the fourth instance of a low pressure area triggering downpour in the state this month.

In the past three days, several parts of the state have experienced rain under the influence of a low pressure area.

The low pressure area over northwest Odisha now lies over north Chhattisgarh and adjoining eastern Madhya Pradesh, the MeT Centre said.

Under the influence of the new low pressure area, light to moderate rain will occur in most parts of Odisha over the next four days, with heavy to very heavy downpour expecting to lash some places in Nuapada, Bolangir, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack and Dhenkanal districts till Monday, it said.

Similarly, parts of Puri, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Boudh, Angul, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Ganjam, Nayagarh and Khurda districts are likely to receive heavy downpour.

Heavy rain may also lash some places in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Jajpur and Bhadrak on Monday and Tuesday, the MeT Centre said.

The intensity of rain may increase in parts of Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Dhenkanal and Kendrapara districts on August 29, it said.

Squally weather with wind speeds reaching up to 55 kmph will prevail and condition of sea along the Odisha coast will be very rough. Fishermen are cautioned against venturing into the sea, the MeT Centre said.

Meanwhile, water level at Hirakud Dam stood at 621.23 feet against the full reservoir capacity of 630 feet with water inflow at 55,502 cusec and outflow at 22,374 cusec, officials said.

Several areas of south and west Odisha had witnessed flash floods owing to incessant rainfall triggered by two consecutive low pressure areas earlier this month.
