While Rakesh Sethy died in a Khurda school when a boundary wall of a government concern gave-in, a 13-year-old school girl Swarnalata Rout of Jajpur district died on the spot when the school main gate collapsed on her.
Taking up these two unfortunate incidents, social activist and advocate Prabir Das had approached OHRC urging them to direct the state government to adequately compensate the families of the victims.
Deciding the matters separately, the commission directed the secretary of rural development to pay a damage of Rs one lakh to the family of Sethy and the school and mass education secretary was also directed to pay an equal amount to the family of Rout, informed the petitioner advocate Prabir Das.
