Garrigan, 33, who starred on "24: Live Another Day", will make his first appearance in the fifth season premiere of the ABC series, reported Aceshowbiz.
The show's King Arthur is described as a "good and just ruler" who, beneath the surface, is "a master manipulator who can carry a grudge to the grave."
He bears an "eternal burning love" for Guinevere that borders on controlling.
"As we do on 'Once Upon a Time', we're doing our own twist on Camelot, on Arthur's background and on his relationships with Merlin, Guinevere and Lancelot," executive producers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis said.
Camelot will play a big role in the upcoming season of "Once Upon a Time" as it was revealed in the fourth season finale that the mysterious Sorcerer, who may be able to save Emma (Jennifer Morrison), is actually Merlin, King Arthur's mentor.
"Once Upon a Time" returns with new episodes starting Sunday, September 27 on ABC.
