Superintendent of Police Anand Kumar Singh said six of the 20 injured were in a serious condition.
The SP said a group of pilgrims from Uttar Pradesh had come to take a dip in Triveni river near Valmiki Nagar on Indo-Nepal border on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya and while they were returning, their vehicle overturned.
Driver of the pick-up van, Mohammad Shakir, died in the accident, the SP said.
Two-third of the injured were women, the SP added.
The victims belong to Mahuadih village of Kushinagar in Uttar Pradesh.
