Replying to a question on the number of cases pending due to staff crunch, Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions Jitendra Singh said, "No specific number of cases can be attributed to man power shortage."
However, the data provided by him in his response showed that the number of pending cases with CBI have increased from 1,004 on December 31, 2014 to 1,286 on June 30, 2016, a rise of over 28 per cent.
A total of 1,531 posts in CBI are vacant out of a sanctioned strength of 7,274, the response said.
"The number of vacancies at various levels keeps changing from time to time. It is the endeavour of the central government as well as CBI to fill up vacant posts expeditiously. To fill up the vacancies, the government takes various steps as and when necessary to ensure that vacancies are filled speedily," he said.
The data included two officers of the rank of Joint Secretary and above and 41 private persons.
He said the agency has registered 3,970 cases since 2013 and disposed of 3,586 cases.
