One-fifth of investigation officer posts in CBI vacant: Govt

CBI is facing a severe staff crunch with over 20 per cent vacancies in the crucial executive cadre, mostly investigation officers, while nearly 1,300 cases are pending with it, Lok Sabha was informed today.
Replying to a question on the number of cases pending due to staff crunch, Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions Jitendra Singh said, "No specific number of cases can be attributed to man power shortage."
However, the data provided by him in his response showed that the number of pending cases with CBI have increased from 1,004 on December 31, 2014 to 1,286 on June 30, 2016, a rise of over 28 per cent.
Details of vacancies till April 1, 2016, provided by the minister, show that out of sanctioned strength of 5,000 in Executive cadre, CBI has a vacancy of 1,043, in Legal cadre 103 posts are vacant as against sanctioned 370, in Technical cadre the number of vacancies is 65 out of 162, in ministerial segment 294 posts are vacant out of sanctioned 1,672 and 26 post are vacant in canteen group out of sanctioned 70.
A total of 1,531 posts in CBI are vacant out of a sanctioned strength of 7,274, the response said.
"The number of vacancies at various levels keeps changing from time to time. It is the endeavour of the central government as well as CBI to fill up vacant posts expeditiously. To fill up the vacancies, the government takes various steps as and when necessary to ensure that vacancies are filled speedily," he said.
In a separate response, the minister said CBI has arrested 34 gazetted officers, 45 non-gazetted officers and others in 112 corruption cases during the period from January 1, 2016 to July 15, 2016.
The data included two officers of the rank of Joint Secretary and above and 41 private persons.
He said the agency has registered 3,970 cases since 2013 and disposed of 3,586 cases.
