A 35-year-old man was caught in northwest Delhi for allegedly cheating people by cloning their ATM cards and withdrawing money from their accounts, police said today.
Accused Ravi Kumar was caught while withdrawing money from an SBI branch in Shalimar Bagh earlier this week, DCP (northwest) Aslam Khan said.
Kumar allegedly possessed 19 accounts, including of two companies he had found to stash the money. An amount of Rs 1.2 crore was found deposited in the accounts while police also recovered Rs 1.13 lakh cash from him, Khan added.
The DCP said recoveries from the accused included 3123 cloned ATM cards, 11,500 fresh uncloned cards, three magnetic card reader and writer machines, two magnetic card reader machines, a computer, four laptops, 18 mobile phones and 65 debit/credit cards of various banks.
In December last year, a customer of the SBI Shalimar Bagh branch, Nitin, received a message saying Rs 30,400 was withdrawn from his account although he had made no such transaction.
A CCTV footage showed a man withdrawing the money from an SBI ATM at the time shown in the message received by Nitin. On February 1, the branch manager saw the accused in the branch and apprehended him. He was later handed over to police, the officer said.
"The accused disclosed that he gained about Rs 3 crore by cloning ATM cards. He was found linked to 11 cases of similar nature," DCP Khan said.
