The official said a mechanic Shankar Keout, who used to repair old refrigerators, had stacked them in a room in the house of one Brahmadeo Majhi which he used as a godown.
Keoout had come with four labourers to clean the godown when one of the refrigerators burst. While Pappu Ram (35) died on the spot, Keout and two others were injured and rushed to Bardhhaman Medical College and Hospital.
Durgapur Police Commissioner Ajay Nanda and Additional Police Commissioner Subhankar Maity rushed to the spot.
Nanda said a forensic team would visit the place tomorrow and would examine the cause of the blast.
