The incident took place yesterday when a youth allegedly eve-teased a school girl, following which passers-by thrashed the youth and handed him over to police. A complaint was also lodged by the girl.
However, after some time, two groups clashed and pelted stones at each other over the incident, leaving one dead and many others injured, Washim Superintendent of Police Vinita Sahu said.
Yesterday, district collector Rahul Dwivedi had clamped Section 144 of the CrPC (curfew) to quell violence. In view of the tense situation, the curfew has remained in force.
Two companies of State Reserve Police have been deployed in the area to ward off any untoward incident and arrests are being made in this connection, the SP added.
