lynched leading to protests by local residents, police said today.
According to police officers, two suspected thieves were severely beaten up last night at Kendukona under Kamalpur police station area.
The duo, identified as Putul Ali and Idar Ali, were rescued by the police and were sent to Gauhati Medical College Hospital for treatment, where Putul breathed his last.
Following this, angry residents blocked the National Highway and demanded arrest of those who had beaten the duo.
Senior district administration and police officers rushed to the spot to diffuse the tension.
Meanwhile, four persons have been arrested in connection with the incident. Further investigation is on, police said.
