In a bid to control the sky-rocketing price of the vegetable, which is available in the open market for Rs 80 per kg, the official said 100 ration shops across the district will sell onions at a "cheap" rate of Rs 45 per kg starting today.
"A Ration card holder can buy only one kg onion in a day. Even as onion price has soared to 80 kg in open market, we would provide residents with onion for Rs 45 a kg," district food supply officer Anil Kumar Dubey said.
Food department official said they were buying onions from vegetable markets in wholesale, and selling it at 100 shops located in Vijaynagar, Kavinagar, Shastrinagar, Loni, among others.
The vegetable will be sold at ration shops from 8 AM to 4 PM every day.
