Bringing in an ordinance to push through the Food Security Bill was nothing but an attempt by the Congress-led UPA government to deceive the people, BJP national spokesperson Nirmala Sitaraman alleged today.
The party termed the move to take the ordinance route as a political tactic which Congress had resorted to with an eye on winning votes in the upcoming general elections.
"The government, instead of promoting a debate on the (Food Security Bill) in the Monsoon Session, abruptly brought the ordinance and got it passed by the President, thereby deceiving the opposition and reneging on its own word," Sitaraman said during her visit here.
The UPA government is resorting to unconstitutional and undemocratic ways in order to escape a debate in Parliament which would evolve a general consensus on the bill, Sitaraman added.
After the Union cabinet approved the said ordinance on Wednesday, President Pranab Mukherjee signed the ordinance yesterday.
Referring to the hue and cry over the CBI chargesheet in the Ishrat Jahan encounter case, Sitaraman said that the case was based less on evidence and more on the inputs provided by the Union home ministry.
