Organisers of an Indian Super League tie scheduled between FC Goa and FC Pune City at Fatorda on October 8 have decided to engage private security for the fixture, a day after police refused to provide security citing the upcoming BRICS summit.
"ISL organisers have informed us that they will be engaging private security inside the (Jawaharlal Nehru) stadium for frisking and other security arrangements," South District Collector Swapnil Naik told PTI today.
At the match to be played in Fatorda near Margao town, home team FC Goa will take on FC Pune city.
Meanwhile, Naik said organisers have proposed that police be asked to provide security outside the ground including traffic arrangements.
"I have referred the proposal for outside security to district police chief who will take a call on it," he said.
Goa police had refused to provide security for the match as they are pre-engaged in the preparations for BRICS summit, which is scheduled on October 15-16.
When contacted, Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar said that he has asked police to provide security for the fixture, but didn't clarify whether security would be provided by police outside the stadium or inside.
"There is a stress on police machinery as they are getting prepared to host BRICS, but that doesn't mean that we won't provide security for the ISL match. I have asked police to give them security," Parsekar said.
However, Superintendent of Police (South Goa) Shekhar Prabhudesai said police will take care of situation outside the stadium.
"We will provide skeletal staff for the match who will take care of law and order outside the stadium. We cannot spare the large number of force as they are busy in mock drills and rehearsals for BRICS," Prabhudesai said.
