Lakshman Singh, Congress veteran Digvijay Singh's brother, on Friday took potshots at senior party leaders who, as lawyers of former Union minister P Chidambaram, failed to get relief for him from the courts.

Congress leaders Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Manu Singhvi were among the lawyers who defended Chidambaram who yet failed to get anticipatory bail and was arrested in the INX Media case by the CBI on Wednesday.

"I hope Chidambaram comes out as innocent and the party's image stays clean, but I am saddened that all our mathadhish (stalwart) lawyers who got Rajya Sabha berths repeatedly failed to get bail for him," Singh, a Congress MLA, said without naming anyone.

Singh had mocked his own party leaders earlier too.

In April last year, when the Congress high command was about to appoint Kamal Nath as chief of the Madhya Pradesh unit, Singh tweeted that Nath leading the party in assembly polls was "like playing HMV record in an age of bluetooth technology".

After the Congress was voted out of power in Madhya Pradesh in 2003, Singh joined the BJP and won two Lok Sabha elections on its ticket. The BJP showed him the door in 2010 after he criticised its then chief Nitin Gadkari.

He returned to the Congress in 2013.
