More than 150 paramilitary personnel committed suicide during 2014 and the first four months of this year owing to a variety of reasons, a government data has said.
A brief report prepared by the Union Home Ministry said while various central forces like Central Reserve Police Force, Border Security Force, Indo-Tibetan Border Police, Sashastra Seema Bal, Central Industrial Security Force and Assam Rifles reported 120 suicide cases last year, the corresponding figures till April 30, 2015 were thirty-five.
"Few more suicide cases have been reported in these forces during May, 2015 for which the data is under compilation.
"There are a variety of reasons for the troops taking this extreme step including issues related to family problems and work stress. A slew of welfare measures are being taken to address these challenges," a senior official said.
With a combined strength of about 8-lakh personnel, the central paramilitary forces are deployed for rendering a variety of internal security tasks including border guarding duties. They are also requisitioned by the government to help in the conduct of elections and maintenance of law and order in trouble-prone areas.
