With this addition, the total number of registered publication has reached 1,14,820 as on March 31, 2017, said an official release, quoting a report, 'Press in India 2016-17', prepared by the Registrar of Newspapers for India (RNI).
The total number of publications comprised 16,993 in newspaper category (daily, tri-bi-weekly) and 97,827 periodicals.
Uttar Pradesh, with 17,736 publications, topped the list of states with registered publications, followed by Maharashtra (15,673).
The largest number of publications registered in any language was Hindi (46,587), followed by English (14,365).
Speaking on the occasion, Irani said the publication was an important document to map the progress of the Indian newspaper industry in the last one year and gave a comprehensive analysis of the contours of the growth for the industry specially the growth amongst regional language publications.
Besides emphasising the need for releasing the report digitally, she said that data on publications in regional language should be analysed, for its growth and dispersal.
The largest circulated newspaper was the Kolkata edition of the Bengali daily 'Ananda Bazar Patrika' with a claimed circulation of 11,16,428, followed by Delhi edition of 'The Times of India' (9,56,054 circulation), as per the release.
The largest circulated multi-edition daily was "Dainik Bhaskar" with 46 editions (47,36,785 circulation), followed by "The Times of India" with 33 editions (42,68,703 circulation).
The largest circulated periodical was "The Sunday Times of India", weekly edition, Delhi.
The largest circulated periodical in Malayalam was "Vanitha", fortnightly edition, Kottayam, as per the release.
As many as 38 publications were shut during 2016-17.
The total 'claimed' circulation of publications stood at 48,80,89,490 in 2016-17 -- Hindi publications 23,89,75,773; English publications 5,65,77,000; and Urdu publications 3,24,27,005.
