The Pakistan Rangers last night handed over the bodies of a mother-son duo who had committed suicide by jumping into river Chenab in Akhnoor area of Jammu district on April 28.
The victims identified as Anita Choudhary, wife of Sunil Choudhary, along with her four-year-old son Arnav, residents of Kalsian village in Noshere tehsil of Rajouri district, had jumped into river Chenab after some altercation with her husband.
"The bodies were washed away in the Chenab river and their bodies were recovered from near Head Marala dam in Sialkot district of Pakistan," a police officer said.
After the bodies were not traced on the Indian side, message was conveyed to the Pakistan authorities and they informed the Indian authorities after tracing the bodies.
"A flag meeting was held last night between the Pakistan rangers and the BSF on the Octroi post in Suchetgarh where the Pakistani rangers after conducting proper identification of the bodies handed over the bodies to the Indian authorities," the officer said.
The bodies were taken to the government medical college hospital, Jammu, for postmortem and later handed over to the kin for last rites.
"The husband of the victim has been arrested for abetting suicide and we have launched an investigation into the case," the officer said.
He said that the Pakistan side had initially buried the body of the four year old victim as they could not identify him initially.
"They exhumed the body when identification was given to them and later when the body of the mother was recovered from the dam, both the bodies were handed over to Indian side," he said.
