The woman had an illicit relationship with 28-year-old Chinnaraju, a divorcee.
She had gone to Kalakadu, 40 km from here, with Chinnaraju, an autorickshaw driver, but had an argument with him. Following this, Chinnaraju threw acid on her and fled from the spot, police said.
Police said the acid had burnt the face and torso of the woman and she had been admitted to the government hospital at Palayamkottai, where doctors said her condition was critical.
The woman and her husband were staying in the house of Chinnaraju's sister.
