The 10th standard student was returning home from tuition this evening with her friend when the car hit them, killing one of them on the spot and seriously injuring the other, police said.
After the accident, both pastors abandoned the vehicle and fled the spot.
Angry locals then gathered at the police station and demanded that they be arrested. Some pelted stones at the police station and nearby police quarters. Their attempt to torch two state transport buses was foiled by police.
The pastors from the church at Thalawady were later detained and the jeep seized, police said.
The injured girl was taken to Coimbatore Medical college hospital after treatment at government hospital at Sathyamangalam, they said.
A heavy police contingent has been posted in the village, as a precautionary measure.
