PAU to work on developing disease-resistant breed of tomato

The Department of Vegetable Science of Punjab Agriculture University (PAU) will develop new breeds of tomato which are resistant to disease and worms, a varsity official said today.
The project, termed Marker-Assisted Selection for Multiple Disease Resistance in greenhouse tomato, has been awarded to PAU by the Union Department of Science and Technology.
The project aims to develop tomato cultivars resistant to late blight and root knot nematodes, suitable for greenhouse cultivation, a PAU spokesman said.
The official further informed that the project carries monthly fellowship of Rs 50,000 for a period of three years along with working contingency.
