Congress today demanded a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the family of the sugarcane farmer of Lakhimpur Kheri who committed suicide over rising debts.
The demand was made after a Congress delegation, led by former minister Raj Bahadur, which met the family of Satyapal of Bastauli village in Bhira police station area who in his suicide note had mentioned debts as the cause of committing suicide.
The delegation members told reporters that they also demanded a government job for his son, pension for his widow and funds for the marriage of the two daughters of the deceased.
They also demanded that the government make arrangements for immediate purchase of sugarcane by mills and urgent payment of arrears of the last crushing season.
The delegation was sent to Lakhimpur on the directives of the UPCC president Nirmal Khatri to meet the members of the bereaved family and back the demands of sugarcane growers.
