The BJP's Punjab unit Tuesday finalised its candidates for the upcoming elections to the zila parishads and panchayat samitis, slated to be held on September 19.

The party, which is to contest the polls in alliance with its NDA partner Shiromani Akali Dal, has also decided to field its candidates on its own party symbol.

"We completed today the process of finalising the candidates for zila parishads and panchayat samitis polls," said Punjab BJP chief Shwait Malik.

The names of the BJP candidates for the municipal polls were finalised in the party's election panel meeting, chaired by Malik and attended by its members, including former state unit chiefs Vijay Sampla and Kamal Sharma and general secretaries of the state unit.

The party earlier along with Akali Dal had formed panels for selection of the candidates.

The elections for zila parishads and panchayat samitis in Punjab are going to be held on September 19 with the counting slated on September 22.

A total of 354 zila parishad members and 2,900 for panchayat samitis are to be elected in the polls.

Meanwhile, the process of filing nominations for the 22 zila parishads and 150 panchayat samitis began today, though no one turned up to file nomination on the first day.
