Haryana Health Minister Anil Vij today said the Chief Minister Amarinder Singh-led Punjab government will have to honour the Supreme Court's verdict on the SYL canal issue and give the state its share of water.
"Amarinder Singh cannot stop Haryana's share of water at any level. The Sutlej-Yamuna-Link (SYL) canal will be completed at any cost," he told reporters here.
The Minister said the newly sworn-in Punjab Chief Minister, Amarinder, will have to honour the Supreme Court's verdict on the SYL canal issue, which was in Haryana's favour.
The court's verdict last year invalidated a 2004 law passed by Punjab to terminate the SYL canal water-sharing agreement with its neighbouring states, he said.
Hitting-out at Opposition parties, the INLD and the Congress, in Haryana, Vij said they rake up the SYL issue only for their political benefits.
Replying to a question, he said the BJP could have done better in the Punjab Assembly elections if it had contested the polls on its own.
The BJP fought the recently concluded Punjab election along with its ally the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). The former won on three seats and the latter on 15 seats in 117-member Punjab Assembly.
