He took over from Pramod Kumar, who was in-charge DGP since the untimely death of earlier DGP Amitabh Pathak on August 23 last year in Thailand.
Speaking to PTI, Thakur said, "We will take pre-emptive steps to ensure law and order in the state is under control."
"We will time and again review the security situation in the state and take proactive and preventive steps to maintain law and order."
Thakur, 57, was previously Inspector General (Prisons) and was in news when 2008 Ahmedabad bomb blasts accused attempted a daring prison escape earlier this year from the Sabarmati Central Jail by digging a 200-ft long tunnel.
