A bench of Chief Justice G Rohini and R S Endlaw asked Additional Solicitor General Sanjay Jain to examine the facts, saying on what basis the airlines are not accepting Rupees.
"If these (products) are sold in Rupees, all of us will be happy. We actually want to know the reason behind this (not accepting Indian currency)," the court said, adding "we also want to become patriotic."
The plea alleged the national honour of India has been brought into disrepute by the airlines' refusal to accept rupees for onboard sale.
It said the operation of such airlines and shipping company which refuse to accept rupees, be banned.
"Direct R1 and R2(Ministry of Civil Aviation and Ministry of Finanace) to take steps and completely ban airline or shipping company which refuse rupees on all outbound and inbound, operated from Indian territory," the plea said.
