A PIL filed before Madhya Pradesh High Court today sought a direction to the state government to disclose all the details of the alleged safe passage to Warren Anderson, the deceased CEO of now-defunct Union Carbide Corporation, in December 1984.
Anderson, one of the prime accused of Bhopal gas tragedy case, visited Bhopal for a day after the world's worst industrial disaster took place, but managed to flee from the state capital on December 7, 1984 after posting bail.
He never turned up for trial and was declared absconder by the court. He died in the US recently.
"The people do not know the reality as to how Anderson could get an aircraft and by whom he was flown out of the country," the PIL says.
"All these essential information has not been put forth before the public," says petitioner, NGO Nagrik Upbhokta Margdarshak Manch.
The division bench of Chief Justice Ajay Khanvilkar and Justice Vandana Kasrekar clubbed the PIL with another petition related to the tragedy, which may come up for hearing next week.
The state government, in June 2010, had set up a one-man judicial commission of Justice (retd) S L Kochar, to probe, among other things, the then state government's role in arrest, release and safe passage given to Anderson.
Anderson was the Union Carbide CEO when the toxic methyl isocyanate gas leaked from its pesticide plant in Bhopal on the intervening night of December 2-3, 1984. The leak killed more than 3,500 persons and affected over 5.50 lakh people.
