On a tip-off that at least 12 PLFI ultras assembled in the forests of Regede, the police tried to cordon them off yesterday, Superintendent of Police M Tamilvanan told a news conference after the forces returned.

On sighting the policemen, the extremists, including self-styled sub-zonal commander Tileshwar Gop, fired on them which triggered a brief encounter, he said.

However, the ultras managed to escape from the spot.

There was no casualty on any side, the SP said adding the police found two rifles, bullets, rucksacks, four mobile phones and 14 sim cards from the site.
