In his condolence message, Modi said that a "promising public career has been tragically cut short" with his passing away.
"I am deeply saddened to learn about the sudden and untimely demise of your worthy son, His Highness Sheikh Rashid bin Mohammed Al-Maktoum," Modi said in his letter to his counterpart, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum.
Sheikh Rashid died of heart attack yesterday. He was 33. He was the first son of Sheikh Mohammed and his senior wife, Sheikha Hind bint Maktoum bin Juma Al Maktoum. In addition to his role as Dubai ruler, Sheikh Mohammed is vice-president and prime minister of the UAE.
Modi had visited UAE in August on a two-day visit, a first by an Indian prime minister in 34 years to a country that is also home to 2.6 million Indians.
