The Madras High Court today restrained PMK from proceeding with arrangements to conduct its state-level political conference here on February 14 on a piece of land which is reportedly under dispute.
The division bench, comprising Justices Satish K Agnihotri and M Venugopal, while adjourning to February 12 the appeal filed by the DGP and other officials, directed the counsel for VGP Housing Private Limited, party to the litigation, to take instructions.
The litigation with regard to the land is pending before a division bench of the High Court.
A division bench had on October 15, 2015 restrained all parties concerned from alienating, transferring and creating any encumbrance on the property where the conference is scheduled to take place.
A board was also erected at the site stating that "Land under court dispute" on instructions by the Commissioner of Land Reforms, Chennai.
A single judge of the Madras High Court had on January 29 allowed PMK's petition to conduct the meet on the land and observed that the restraint order by the division bench does not come in the way of granting permission to hold the meet.
The Revenue Divisional Officer, Chengalpattuand the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Vandalur, had moved court stating that PMK was suppressing the pendency of the writ appeal by challenging it.
They also submitted that the interim order of the division bench was not taken into account while allowing the petition and this order cannot be interfered when the appeal is pending.
They submitted that the government would be put to much hardship if the order of the single judge was not stayed.
