With the arrest of two persons, Delhi Police today claimed to have busted an auto-lifter gang which allegedly used to dismantle the stolen vehicles and sell them off at the scrap market in west Delhi.
The accused, identified as Avtar Singh (24) and Arif (30), dismantled vehicles instead of reselling them to avoid getting detected by the police. They had allegedly set up a garage at west Delhi's Mundka area for the purpose, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra Yadav said.
The duo had met in jail and started their gang after being released on bail. After their arrest, the police recovered 15 motorbikes and two cars from their possession, Yadav said.
"On sustained interrogation, both the accused persons disclosed that all the vehicles found in the garage were stolen by them from the area of Tilak Nagar, Vikas Puri, Rajouri Garden and Hari Nagar in west Delhi," said a police official.
They further disclosed that they have hired the garage on rent and used to dispose off the stolen vehicles after dismantling them and converting them into scraps to avoid detection, the official said.
"They further disclosed that they use to sell the scrap in Maya Puri market to scrap dealers at the rate of Rs 13 per kg. The scrap of one medium car usually weighs about 1300 kg whereas that of a big car is about 1800 kg," said the official.
Efforts are on to nab the other members in the gang, police added.
