Inspector General of police, Jammu, S D Singh Jamwal paid rich tributes to martyrs on the occasion of Police Commemoration Day here on Sunday.
Participating at an event in the Police Martyrs Memorial in the railway station here, Jamwal prayed for peace for departed personnel and also for the prosperity and welfare of their families.
Later, Jamwal inaugurated a blood donation camp where many personnel of the force volunteered to donate blood. A number of senior police officers attended the event, a police spokesman said.
"National Police Day" popularly known as Police Commemoration Day is celebrated every year in the memory of ten CRPF personnel, who laid down their lives when resisting an attack by the PLA at the Hot Spring in Ladakh at a height of 4,681 metres on this day in 1959.
Impressive functions were organised in all 10 districts of Jammu province, where many current and retired senior police officers, members of martyrs' families and members of civil society participated, the spokesman said.
In the winter capital, the main function was conducted at Gulshan Ground where the IGP took the salute of the commemoration day parade.
The spokesman said Jamwal read out the names of 415 martyrs of the country in the last year, which included martyrs from police organisations and paramilitary forces.
Lauding the role of martyrs, the IGP said Jammu and Kashmir police has been rendering yeoman service to the nation and the society under hostile and challenging circumstances at the cost of personal safety and comforts.
Later, the IGP interacted with next of kin of the martyrs.
He heard the grievances of the kin of martyrs and assured full support and timely action.
Another impressive function was organised in the evening at the Police Martyrs Memorial in the railway station here where a large number of police personnel and civilians assembled to pay their tributes, the spokesman said.
