Most of the students who took out the procession belonged to the students' wing of ruling CPI(M), the Students' Federation of India (SFI).
Police said a case has been registered against 1,000 students, including girls, for blocking traffic for over half an hour this afternoon.
The students beat drums and danced on the roads, blocking traffic from East Fort to Palayam. The State Secretariat is located in this stretch.
With Kerala's biggest festival 'Onam' to be held next week, the road block caused severe difficulties to people who had come for shopping.
The Kerala High Court had earlier banned taking out processions by blocking roads and causing inconvenience to public.
