Police register case in Hyd 'corporal' punishment incident

A day after a woman teacher at a private school at Erragadda here allegedly hit students for not speaking in English during her class, the police have registered a case in connection with the incident today.
The Hyderabad district education department sent an Inspecting Officer to the school today to verify the incident and has found that the students of class V were indeed subjected to "corporal punishment".
However, they did not specify whether the reason was same as alleged by the parents of the children.
According to one of the parents, the teacher allegedly hit 42 students of class V with a wooden ruler for not speaking in English.
A girl student said, "the teacher hit everyone with a wooden scale. Out of fear I did not go to school today."
Hyderabad District Education Officer, A Subba Reddy said, "The Deputy DEO (Khairatabad Zone) inquired into the incident and has submitted a report to me this evening which is against the private school management (and) says (that) the students were meted out corporal punishment."
Now the report will be forwarded to Hyderabad district collector and also to the Regional Joint Director of School Education, he said.
The Child Rights Protection Commission had taken up the matter suo motu and issued notices to the teacher and the school principal, besides the DEO with a direction to them to appear before it on July 21.
"A report will also be submitted to the Commission on the incident," the DEO said.
Meanwhile, S R Nagar police station Inspector G V Ramana Goud said that following a complaint by an official of Juvenile Justice Board, they have registered a case under section 23 of Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act (Punishment for cruelty to juvenile or child) and are carrying out further investigation.
The teacher's name is withheld.
