Puducherry Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy today urged fleet operators, two-wheeler riders and other vehicle users to ensure that Puducherry emerged as 'a road accident free' Union Territory.
There were around nine lakh vehicles registered with the Transport department which were plying on the roads here. Vehiclesfrom Southern States were also plying in the Union Territory from the Southern States and there was thus a heavy traffic flow in Puducherry, he said.
Narayanasamy said two-wheelers accounted for 46 per cent of the total road accidents. Sixty persons who did not use helmets while riding two-wheelers were killed in mishaps here last year.
The Administration had therefore decided that all two-wheeler riders should wear compulsorily helmets and this would come into force from May 1 this year, he said.
"There will be no relaxation or exemption from helmet wearing mandate," he said, inaugurating the Road Safety Week, organised by the state government owned Road Transport Corporation here.
Narayanasamy declared open a Health Check up booth for workers and crew of the State Transport Corporation on the precincts of the Corporation office in neighbouring Orleanpet.
