In a bid to enhance the quality and monetisation, the Prasar Bharti may allow outsourcing of various programming slots of public broadcaster Doordarshan to private players.
The government has given an in-principle approval to the proposal to collaborate with the private parties to enhance quality and monetisation in the media and entertainment (M&E) sector, said Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Special Secretary J S Mathur.
"The details of the proposal is being worked out by the Prasar Bharti Board and would be finalised soon," said Mathur.
He further added that the decision would give a boost to various segments of the media and entertainment industry, particularly the animation sector.
"There is scope for making films directed at children, an idea was floated for promoting kids' channels through CSR funding. This initiative would go a long way in meeting the growing need for making films directed at certain segments like children, rural people and other social strata of the society," Mathur said while addressing CII Big Picture Summit.
Besides, TRAI Advisor Sunil Singhal also said that there was need for segregating carriage fee and placement fee for the media industry.
"Issues relating to carriage fee can be discussed separately since the government was also keen to have right monetisation of the M&E sector through advertisements and subscription," said Singhal.
Over the growing reach of the digital media, he said that the consumer interests should be assigned highest importance.
He further added that by 2016, the government would complete its digitisation drive.
