President pays tribute to soldiers on Kargil Vijay Diwas
Press Trust of India New Delhi President Ram Nath Kovind today paid tributes to the armed forces on the Kargil Vijay Diwas.
In his tweets, the President said, "nation's gratitude to the brave men and women of armed forces who keep our country safe and secure."
"Salute the martyrs and their families for their ultimate sacrifice," he said.
The undetected entry of the Pakistan army disguised as terrorists on crucial heights in Kargil sector in 1999 triggered a conflict lasting for two months which had claimed the lives of over 500 Indian soldiers.
Fighting in tough terrain and elements of nature, the Indian forces won these heights through the successful operation.
