The National Human Rights Commission today asked the Rajasthan government to pay Rs 2 lakh as monetary relief to the next of kin of a man who had committed suicide in judicial custody.
The commission has recommended that the state government pay monetary relief to the next of kin of Suresh, who committed suicide by hanging himself in judicial custody, a statement issued by NHRC said.
Suresh, a resident of Role village in Bikaner district, was serving life sentence for killing his wife.
NHRC has also sought compliance report, along with proof of payment within six weeks from the state government, the statement said.
Earlier, in response to the Commission's notices, the Additional Chief Secretary (Home) of Rajasthan had confirmed the incident and accepted the lapse on part of the jail staff.
He also said that the state government does not have any objection in paying monetary relief to the next of kin of the deceased.
The rights panel had taken cognisance of the incident on an intimation received from Superintendent, Central prison, Bikaner about the incident.
