Students of private schools fare better than those in government schools and the gap in scores for the two categories of students was the widest in English subject, according to a survey carried out by NCERT to assess their learning levels.
This information was shared by Minister of State for HRD Upendra Kushwaha in reply to a question in Lok Sabha.
The survey covered students at secondary level at government, government aided and private schools. It was carried out for the first time in 2015 at national level covering 33 states/UTs.
Students were assessed in a total of five subjects- English, Mathematics, Science, Social Science, Modern Indian Language.
While private school students secured more marks than government school students in all subjects, government school students fared the worst in English when compared to their peers in private schools.
In terms of overall mean achievement score students in private schools secured 18 per cent more than government school students.
"These findings are not conclusive as background variables such as family, educational and occupation status of parents have impact on student performance," the minister said.
In Modern Indian Language the score of private school students was higher by 14.4 per cent.
In Social Science private school students bettered government school children by 13.8 per cent.
In Science private schools were better by 12.9 per cent.
Students of private schools were also better in Mathematics by a gap of 12.5 per cent.
