Pressure groups demanding a comprehensive mechanism to check influx in Meghalaya today said they will meet Chief Minister Mukul Sangma to seek clarification on the constitution of two committees by the state government on the issue
The decision came in the wake of leaders of several pressure groups including the Khasi Students Union (KSU) and the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People facing arrest warrants from a special court constituted by the government to try cases related to violation of the Supreme Court order on bandhs and various clauses of Meghalaya Maintenance of Public Order Act (MMPO).
"We would soon write to the state government on the need to convene a meeting with the 13 pressure groups seeking clarity on the objective of the two committees which was constituted recently," KSU president Daniel Khyriem told reporters after their meeting here.
Daniel was one of those leaders who had received arrest warrants for which they have to appear in person in the special court of R Rymbai on July 25.
The state government had constituted three committees, all related to the issue of influx during its meeting held earlier on July 10, following pressure from 13 groups demanding immediate implementation of the comprehensive mechanism as proposed by them in April.
The committee headed by the Director, State's Anti-Infiltration Directorate was asked to identify locations for setting up of 'entry' and 'exit' points to address the issue of illegal immigration and influx while the committee headed by Deputy Chief Minister Rowel Lyngdoh was assigned with the responsibility to examine the two Bills relating to benami trade and verification of tenants.
"In view of this, the upcoming meeting is also to know the status of the government's commitment and seriousness with regards to implementation of the NGOs proposed comprehensive mechanism to tackle the issue of influx," KSU president said.
The Police have registered 86 cases related to arson, stone-pelting, murder and other criminal activities which had taken place during the four-month-long agitation sponsored by the 13 pro-ILP groups last year.
