Jammu and Kashmir Government has ordered an inquiry into the death of an elderly man allegedly due to delay in providing him medical aid after the ambulance carrying him was held up by a court officer for using a red beacon in Baramulla district.
The Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir yesterday appointed Baramulla Deputy Commissioner as the inquiry officer to probe into the death of the 80-year-old heart patient on Sopore-Kupwara highway, an official spokesman said here today.
The inquiry officer has been asked to furnish a report within two days, the spokesman said.
Abdul Rehman Dar, died allegedly due to delay in medical aid after the ambulance carrying him was reportedly held up for 30 minutes by the court officer for using a red beacon.
The family of Dar alleged that the ambulance was stopped at Seelu in Sopore area over the use of red beacon and siren on Tuesday while he was being taken to SKIMS hospital Srinagar from north Kashmir after suffering a heart attack.
Dar, a resident of Handwara, breathed his last at the hospital soon after his arrival, the family said, claiming that "inordinate delay had led to his death".
The ambulance was allegedly stopped and the driver was asked to remove the red beacon and siren in view of the Supreme Court ruling.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had sought a report from Inspector General of Police about the incident and later took to micro-blogging site Twitter.Com promising to take up the matter with the high court as the ambulance was not stopped by police but by a mobile magistrate.
