A proposal to provide houses to the flood-affected people in western Maharashtra under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) has been mooted by the state Housing ministry.

Housing Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil told reporters here on Monday that the proposal was forwarded to the Chief Minister's Office (CMO).

"A proposal to provide houses for the flood-hit people in western Maharashtra under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana has been sent to the chief minister's office on behalf of Housing ministry," the minister said.

Massive floods in western Maharashtra, especially in Kolhapur and Sangli districts, have caused widescale destruction and displacement of over four lakh people in the last eight days.

Floods have also damaged houses and crops in the region.

In an outpouring of support for the flood victims, three trucks containing essential food items, mineral water, medicines, edible oil, vegetables, clothes, blankets etc. have been dispatched to Kolhapur and Sangli from Shirdi.

Central Industrial Security Force jawans posted at the Shirdi airport have extended help in the kind, including edible oil tins, food items etc.

Besides, private education trusts in Ahmednagar district have also come forward with the aid.

On August 10, Shri Saibaba Sansthan Trust (SST) announced a financial assistance of Rs 10 crore for the victims of floods in ten districts of the state.
