Noisy scenes were witnessed in the Maharashtra Legislative Council today over the demand of reservations for the Dhangar community with the opposition and the government accusing each other of not being serious on the issue.
While the opposition members accused Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis of not keeping his pre-poll promise, the CM said the opposition was only shedding crocodile tears.
The war of words between the treasury and opposition benches led to an adjournment for five minutes.
Fadnavis, speaking during the question hour in response to a question by Congress's Sharad Ranpise, said the state government will provide reservation in the scheduled tribe category to the community without curtailing quota for tribals, and will send its recommendation to the Centre soon.
"To make the recommendation more effective, and on the advice of the advocate general, we have asked the Adivasi Sanshodhan Prashikshan Kendra (tribal research and training institute) to prepare a proposal. Once ready, it would be sent to the Centre," he said.
Talking about the reservation for the Maratha community, the Chief Minister said, "We are trying to prepare a strong proposal which would make it clear that Maratha community is economically and socially backward. This proposal will be placed before the Supreme Court. For this we are studying the Tamil Nadu pattern."
The previous (Congress-NCP) government did not prepare a strong enough proposal of reservation for Dhangars and it was rejected by the court, the Chief Minister claimed.
