Residents of Kalipalayam, near Samalapuram in neighbouring Tirupur district, staged a protest demonstration today against the opening of a government-run liquor shop, police said.
The agitation was held at the place which was the scene of a lathicharge on protestors seeking closure of an outlet during which a senior police official slapped a woman some two months ago, leading to a furore.
The public raised slogans against the administration's move to open the shop, despite protests, police said.
The protestors alleged that the government had decided to open the shop, without considering the pleas of the residents.
As the protesting public didn't show signs of relenting, senior district administration and police officials rushed to the spot and sought one month time to close the shop, police said.
However, the protesting public have decided to observe a day-long fast while shop-owners have decided to down shutters tomorrow in an effort to step up pressure on the administration.
Also, powerloom units, which are in large number in the district, also extended their support by stopping production for a day, police said.
Samalapuram had witnessed a huge protest a month ago, over opening of liquor shop, which led to latchicharge and an incident in which a ADSP slapped a woman protestor, which went viral on the social media while the Human Rights Commission issued notice to the government.
Meanwhile, a group of farmers from Singanallur in the city staged a demonstration inside the district Collectorate here protesting against setting of liquor shop in and near agriculture lands.
