With the winter session of parliament just two days away, various women organisations today rallied for the passage of women's reservation bill.
The organisations took out a solidarity march in the national capital, reminding the government to keep its widely circulated promise of passing the bill in the parliament, at the earliest.
The women activists said the NDA-led government's majority in the Lok Sabha was enough to fulfil the party's manifesto promise to pass the long-pending bill.
"The women of India are disgusted and appalled to see the government ignoring the bill even after three and half years of being in power. The present government needs to act on it quickly to regain people's trust," Ranjana Kumari, director, Centre for Social Research said.
Under the banner of National Alliance for Women Reservation Bill, activists from more than 50 organisations and RWAs were present at the rally. Centre for Social Research, Joint Women's Programme, Justice Seekers, Women Power Connect, YWCA and many others also joined the demonstration.
"If we get more women in the legislature and increase the gender budget, the country is going to progress," activist from Justice Seeker, Anjali Mehta said.
The women's groups said unless there were more women in politics, their concerns could not be addressed consistently and effectively.
The Rajya Sabha had passed the bill on March 9, 2010.
