Protesters clash with police in Ludhiana

Police fired tear gas shells and used batons to disperse protesters who were opposing the administration's move to take possession of land at Kannian Hussaini village near here.
Twelve persons including six policemen and two members of the health department were injured as the protesters clashed with the police yesterday nearly 45 kms from here.
The injured were hospitalised and were out of danger, police said.
The villagers were opposing the move of the administration to take possession of 10 acres of land, police said today.
The land in question was alloted to Jagir Kaur, widow of a war martyr Bhagh Singh, by the state government.

According to spokesman of the district administration, the families living there refused to give up possession.

Singh's daughter approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court which recently ordered the district administration to take possession of the land.
On the other hand, Surjit Singh, one of the occupants, claimed that they had filed an application to get a stay from the High Court.
"This land has been with us since the time of our forefathers. The Government wants to deprive us of it," he alleged.
Deputy Commissioner Rajat Aggarwal was on the spot for holding talks with the villagers.
