Earlier, Chairman Hamid Ansari mentioned that today was
being observed as World Human Rights Day. On this day in 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
India, he said, has always stood for protection and promotion of human rights and "on this day, we rededicate ourself to the principles of human rights."
The theme for Human Rights Day this year is 'Our Rights. Our Freedoms. Always', Ansari said, adding that a year-long campaign will be launched to commemorate two human rights covenants -- the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
