In a bid to avoid wastage of fresh water, the National Green Tribunal has directed the civic authorities to provide treated sewage water for gardening purposes in a South Delhi colony.
A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Swatanter Kumar prohibited the residents, Delhi Development Authority (DDA), South Delhi Municipal Corporation and the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) from using fresh water for gardening purposes.
"We pass direction that DDA/MCD shall ensure and DJB shall supply treated sewage water for gardening at the fixed rate which will be the primary responsibility of the public authority...
"It is commonly agreed that there is a pipeline in existence for supplying of treated sewage for gardening purpose in the said area. It shall be a joint responsibility of DDA and MCD to ensure that this pipeline is made effectively operative and duly maintained," the bench said.
During the proceedings, the counsel appearing for DJB told the bench that there was a sewage treatment plant in Vasant Kunj in south Delhi from where the treated sewage water can be provided to the residents.
The tribunal was hearing a plea filed by retired Rear Admiral A P Revi seeking directions for supply of treated sewage water in Vasant Kunj for gardening and other purposes so that they do not have to use fresh water.
The plea had said that treated water should be used for the maintenance of greenery in the Vasant Kunj area.
