Puducherry assembly adopts resolution on jallikattu/NEET

Puducherry Assembly today unanimously adopted a resolution urging the Centre to exempt the union territory from the purview of National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for medical admissions.
The House also adopted a resolution requesting the Centre to permit Puducherry government to bring in a legislation to conduct bull taming sport jallikattu every year without hiccups.
Winding up the debate on the resolution moved by him on NEET, Chief Minister V Narayanasamy said he had already written a detailed letter to the Prime Minister and Union Health Minister highlighting the difficulties the students of the four regions of union territory would face in case NEET based admission was adopted foradmission to medical courses.

The regions -- Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam -- have different patterns of academic curriculum in view of their geographical locations and adopting the system in practice in their neighbouring states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, he said.
Hence the CBSE pattern of syllabus based on which NEET examination was conducted wouldpose practical difficulties to students of the union territory.
He said Puducherry should be allowed to continue with the present system of selecting students based on marks obtained in the higher secondary exam and after preparing a rank list by government-sponsored Centralised Admission Commission (CENTAC).
AIADMK legislature wing leader A Anbalagan said the government should bring in a legislation to ensure 50 per cent quota for the government sponsored candidates in private medical colleges.

After the adoption of the two government resolutions, Speaker V Vaithilingam adjourned the House sine die, bringing the curtains down on the brief session.
