The Punjab Congress on Monday held a state-wide protest against the alleged anti-people policies of the Modi government at the Centre.
Party activists held block-level protests at several places in the state.
In Phagwara, activists of the party's block unit staged a three-hour 'dharna' in front of the sub-divisional magistrate's office in Tehsil complex to protest the anti-people policies of the Modi government, and raised slogans against it.
The protest was addressed by local MLA Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal, former Punjab minister Joginder Singh Mann, former PPCC general secretary Harjit Singh Parmar and block president Sanjiv Bugga.
Accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home minister Amit Shah of trying to replace the democracy in the country by a dictatorship, the speakers said the prices of various commodities had touched "sky" during the Modi government, "burning holes in the pockets" of consumers.
Flaying denial of jobs by the BJP-led NDA government, they alleged the Central government was the mother of recession, inflation and economic mess in the country.
They praised economic policies pursued by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
In Fatehgarh Sahib, Congress activists staged a protest in Amloh block.
Addressing the dharna, Congress leaders said Modi government has "failed" on all fronts.
District Congress committee president Subhash Sood also addressed the dharna.
Later a memorandum was submitted to the sub-divisional magistrate.
