A comprehensive policy has been framed to check child sex ratio in Punjab by ensuring proper implementation of a total ban on pre-diagnostic tests, state minister Brahm Mohindra said today.
The state Health department has directed 24x7 online surveillance of ultra-sound centers, while police verification of doctors and other staff posted at such centers has been made mandatory.
Mohindra, Minister for Health and Family Welfare, said the ever decreasing child sex ratio was a serious blot on the state.
He said the Health department has decided to execute a consistent campaign to enforce Pre Conception (PC) and Pre Natal Diagnostic Test (PNDT) Act with an iron hand.
The minister said instructions have been given to all health officials that "any iota of laxity in any reported case of female foeticide and pre-diagnostic tests would now be considered as criminal conspiracy on the part of the erring."
He said although the Punjab government has announced an award of Rs 1 lakh to any person for giving information with regard to violation of PC and PNDT Act, "the Health department has not been receiving any substantial information and complaint beforehand."
The Congress leader said the police department has also been asked to fully cooperate with the Health department to ensure the compliance of the PC and PNDT Act.
"Role of the Punjab police is crucial and sensitive in the identification of these unruly ultra sound centers," Mohindra added.
